Current Issues: Teacher Pipeline

  • College for all’ has failed America. Can the education system be fixed?
  • CITEA Position Paper
CITEA strongly recommends that leadership from all levels of education and industry meet to recognize and address the scope of the problem created by the shortage of qualified teacher replacements for those retiring or leaving teaching to enter industry occupations, and then take a serious look at the causes and effects of this shortage. In other words, the “Teacher Pipeline,” which historically has delivered adequate numbers of qualified CTE teachers, has virtually dried up in California.

California Industrial and Technology Education Association and Foundation

The California Industrial & Technology Education Association (CITEA) was founded in 1928 as the California Industrial Arts Association (CIAA), later became the California Industrial Education Association (CIEA). In its current form, CITEA reflects our commitment to both Technology Education and Industrial/Vocational Education. Due to the ongoing crisis in California's ITE Education System and the need for political engagement to address these issues, CITEA is also a politically active nonprofit organization. The CITEA Foundation carries on the educational, professional development, and networking needs for our membership though-out California.

CITEA Happenings

Conference Happenings

Each year, the CITEA hosts two conferences: CITEA Annual Conference and the MTTA/CITEA Summer Conference. At the last MTTA/CITEA Summer Conference, held at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, over 50 teachers met together along with representatives from industry.

Starting with a social get together at Woodstock's Pizza, the teachers spend the next two days learning about new technology, tools, machines, and procedures. There were seminars for metals, casting, robotics, 3D printing, welding, manufacturing, woodworking, drafting, electricity, entrepreneurship, milling, and more. There were also seven contractors/vendors/experts to provide the latest trends in the technology industry and education. Every conference has hands-on application of skills along with great networking opportunities.

      CITEA January Newsletter
During my 35 year teaching career, I taught Woodshop, Drafting & Design, Small Engines, Technology Explorations, Manufacturing, and Guitar Construction. Like most teachers, I had to fill many roles over the years. I started my teaching career at Mount Miguel High School in the Grossmont Union High School District and finished at West Hills High School.
    • Industrial and Technology Teachers
Teaching in the State of California, like many other states across our nation, is in crisis. Few teachers are being prepared for teaching in Industrial and Technology Education (ITE).
